Kaitlyn’s Status Report for 4/18/2026

What did you personally accomplish this week on the project?

  • Added two device connection (for receiving FPA measurements and sending vibrations via the LRA) into the mobile app
  • Added calibration (pre-session) functionality for initializing the base FPA across all sessions
  • Added data logging feature everytime the FPA measurement data changes. Once session is complete, user will be able to export to CSV.

Is your progress on schedule or behind? If you are behind, what actions will be taken to catch up to the project schedule?

We are currently on schedule as the core functionality of the App is implemented and we’ve done multiple mocap device testing sessions.

What deliverables do you hope to accomplish in the next week?

  • Verify (and debug if necessary) calibration and data logging features
  • Add in the automatic vibration pipeline (sending vibrations based on the FPA)
    • Convert Lakshmi’s Python script to TypeScript
  • Align the FPA measurements with the UI — ie. make the data legible for the user
  • If time: implement AWS backend for storing session summary statistics to database (ie. DynamoDB) to be used for our History/Insights page

As you’ve designed, implemented and debugged your project, what new tools or new knowledge did you find it necessary to learn to be able to accomplish these tasks? What learning strategies did you use to acquire this new knowledge?

  • Mobile app development
    • New tools/knowledge: Expo, React Native, XCode/Apple Development
    • Learning strategies: reading documentation, searching through forums, prompting AI to explain confusing syntax and structure
  • Setting up an AWS project
    • New tools/knowledge: adding collaborators to project (IAM Identity Center), deploying via AWS CLI
    • Learning strategies: watching YouTube tutorials, reading AWS documentation, asking peers with AWS experience

Kaitlyn’s Status Report for 4/4/2026

What did you personally accomplish this week on the project?

    • Polished mock UI pages for interim demo within mobile app
    • Switched FPA integration to run on the mobile app directly rather than through AWS (due to latency and resource constraints)
      • Converted Lakshmi’s Python script to TypeScript to run on mobile device
      • Verified proper FPA integration (connecting + sending data properly in app)

Is your progress on schedule or behind? If you are behind, what actions will be taken to catch up to the project schedule?

We updated our Gantt Chart prior to interim demo and based on our new schedule, we are essentially on track. We plan on conducting testing starting next week and the FPA integration on the mobile app just needs to be verified for accuracy.

What deliverables do you hope to accomplish in the next week?

  • Verify with Lakshmi that the FPA integration is accurately measuring step count, FPA, etc.
  • Implement AWS backend for storing session summary statistics to database (ie. DynamoDB) to be used for our History/Insights page

Kaitlyn’s Status Report for 3/28/2026

What did you personally accomplish this week on the project?

    • Added team members to AWS dashboard via AWS IAM Center
    • Tested AWS Lambda and frontend connection — fully working “Hello World” function
      • wrote out documentation for deploying the backend via AWS CLI
    • Added in Lakshmi’s FPA backend to replace the “Hello World” function (still need to test)

Is your progress on schedule or behind? If you are behind, what actions will be taken to catch up to the project schedule?

We’re slowly getting back on track schedule-wise since Lakshmi’s gotten the FPA backend script working and once I verify the mobile app can properly connect to bluetooth and deploy the FPA script, we will be able to test since the soft case is pretty much ready to use.

What deliverables do you hope to accomplish in the next week?

  • Verify FPA backend is connected and implemented properly
  • (from last week) Integrate AWS Timestream into the mobile app backend
  • Start collecting FPA data (we will be testing with our gaits)

Kaitlyn’s Status Report for 3/21/2026

What did you personally accomplish this week on the project?

    • Implemented AWS Lambda and frontend connection (still need to test)
    • Researched AWS Timestream functionality
    • Met with Prof. Halilaj and updated her on mobile app progress, suggested buying (and reimbursing) the Apple Developer Plan so we can test across different devices

Is your progress on schedule or behind? If you are behind, what actions will be taken to catch up to the project schedule?

Lakshmi has finished up the FPA script and once I finish debugging and testing the AWS connection, we should be back on track and ready for the testing stage.

What deliverables do you hope to accomplish in the next week?

  • Work with Lakshmi to fully integrate the FPA script into the mobile app
  • Integrate AWS Timestream into the mobile app backend (to store past session data)

Kaitlyn’s Status Report for 3/14/2026

What did you personally accomplish this week on the project?

  • Completed Ethics Assignment (Steps 1-3)
  • Added UI element templates (with no backend connection) for our 3 mobile app pages
    • Current Session: current foot angle visualization, short-term FPA line graph, stop/pause session buttons
    • History: past session cards, long-term FPA line graph
    • Analytics: goals / insights text

Is your progress on schedule or behind? If you are behind, what actions will be taken to catch up to the project schedule?

While UI progress on the frontend is somewhat caught up, my progress is still behind since we have not been able to make much progress on implementing and integrating the FPA code. To catch up, I plan to set up AWS while Lakshmi finishes up the FPA script. Then, once both parts are ready, we can piece together the FPA mobile app update workflow.

What deliverables do you hope to accomplish in the next week?

  • Integrate FPA code onto the mobile app backend
  • Set up AWS dashboard for our project
    • Initialize preliminary connection between AWS Lambda and our frontend via API Gateway (ie. send test string’ from frontend and store in backend
    • Conduct background research into AWS Timestream functionality since I have zero experience with the service (unlike AWS Lambda)

Kaitlyn’s Status Report for 3/7/2026

What did you personally accomplish this week on the project?

  • Completed my assigned portions of the design report
    • “Mobile App” subsections in use-case requirements, design requirements, design trade studies, system implementation, and testing/validation
    • Project Management section, including bill of materials table
    • Updated system block diagram figure with connections (ie. I2C, AC)
  • Preliminary outline for UI changes I will make when developing frontend
    • Based on feedback from Prof. Orta-Martinez (ie. only one foot can be analyzed at a time) + our own system adjustments

Is your progress on schedule or behind? If you are behind, what actions will be taken to catch up to the project schedule?

My progress is behind we did not anticipate the design report taking up all of our work time this week. My initial plan was to finish up the report earlier in the week, so I (or we) could spend the remaining days leading up to break on integrating FPA with IMU and updating UI. However, luckily we have accounted for this in our slack time so we still have the opportunity to catch up this coming week. And as Lakshmi mentioned, we should be able to conduct our system testing in parallel saving us some time in the future.

What deliverables do you hope to accomplish in the next week?

(Note that some of these deliverables are the same as last week’s since I was only able to fully complete the design report):

  • Integrate FPA code onto the mobile app backend
  • Add the 3 pages mentioned above (current session, session history, analytics)
    • Focus particularly on FPA UI: regardless of if FPA is properly being measured, the “visuals” should be added to the frontend
  • As an added measure, I will collaborate closely with Lakshmi this week to understand her progress on FPA measurement accuracy/gait detection to ensure the mobile app is properly aligned with the hardware

Kaitlyn’s Status Report for 2/21/2026

What did you personally accomplish this week on the project?

  • Designed UI screens for displaying current session information such as current foot progression angle (FPA), session history (long-term data visualization), as well as analytics (ie. natural language recommendations/trends)
  • Met with Iqui and Prof. Melisa Orta Martinez as a team and discussed built-in step tracking on the iPhone. Looked into how to utilize that feature for our own mobile application
  • Examined Design Report guidelines and started assigning tasks/organizing necessary information

Is your progress on schedule or behind? If you are behind, what actions will be taken to catch up to the project schedule?

My progress is slightly behind since I haven’t been able to fully build out the UI display for the foot angle measurement. To catch up, my group members and I will try to get the design report done earlier in the week, so we have more time to work together on examining and integrating the foot angle progression code with the IMU, as well as updating the UI accordingly.

What deliverables do you hope to accomplish in the next week?

  • Complete the Design Report
  • Integrate FPA code onto the mobile app backend
  • Add the 3 pages mentioned above (current session, session history, analytics)
    • Focus particularly on FPA UI: regardless of if FPA is properly being measured, the “visuals” should be added to the frontend
  • If time: have UI dynamically display changes to the user’s FPA as they walk

Kaitlyn’s Status Report for 2/14/2026

What did you personally accomplish this week on the project?

  • Set up the mobile app (named “lkr-data”) using React Native, Expo, and XCode, then successfully deployed to my iPhone 13 device
    • Wrote up documentation found here, so my team members can set up the mobile app on their own smartphones if necessary
  • Established bluetooth connection between the mobile app and MCU, utilizing the BLE React Native library to scan for BLE devices, write signals to the LRA, and read accelerator data from the MCU (using Lakshmi’s MCU program)
  • Revised block diagram based on advisor feedback and fleshed out UI design requirements & solution approach for the Design Review Presentation
  • Note that although I intended to connect the MCU and IMU along with haptic driver and LRA, Rhea ended up focusing on those aspects since she has stronger soldering experience. Furthermore, app deployment took slightly longer than expected since it was my first time working with React Native and Expo, so majority of my time was spent research and debugging that process.

Is your progress on schedule or behind? If you are behind, what actions will be taken to catch up to the project schedule?

My progress is on schedule since based on our Gantt Chart, my main task for this week was connecting the smartphone to wearable, and I was able to accomplish that. Additionally, my team members managed to complete their week’s tasks as well, setting us up well for next week.

What deliverables do you hope to accomplish in the next week?

  • Make small usability tweaks to current UI (ie. correcting black text on black background)
  • Update mobile app components based on refined UI design requirements and solution approach
    • Implement foot progression angle measurement data/display

Kaitlyn’s Status Report for 2/7/2026

What did you personally accomplish this week on the project?

I assisted my group in debugging the MCU (ESP32) and laptop connection. While the program didn’t work on my own laptop, we were able to work out a couple kinks related to Mac vs Windows Arduino setups. Furthermore, in addition to researching IMUs, I conducted independent research into our solution approach (LRA, Haptic Driver, etc). Since I come from a HCI/frontend background, many of the components and their functions are unfamiliar to me. Even though my main tasks center around software/UI, to be a team contributor, it’s important I can contribute to conversations surrounding the physical device setup.

Is your progress on schedule or behind? If you are behind, what actions will be taken to catch up to the project schedule?

Our progress is somewhat behind, since we were only able to successfully work on the MCU-laptop connection rather than other parts of the pipeline such as haptic driver, IMU connections. Since our plan is to have these connections established by the middle of next week, our team and I will meet synchronously before then to work together to build the pipeline. Over this weekend, I plan to further familiarize with the components we’ve ordered, especially in relation to how these components should work together (and what connectors we’ll need), to prepare for our work session.

What deliverables do you hope to accomplish in the next week?

  • Connect MCU –> IMU and haptic driver –> LRA, integrate with rest of device
  • Broadly research mobile app development (SwiftUI vs React Native), try and deploy an existing simple fullstack app to prep for eventual UI/backend needs
  • If time: start conducting “competitor” research into health data viz platforms like “Apple Health”
