Shayan’s Status Report for 2/27

Progress Made

My main focus this week was with data collection. I continued to amass photo datasets from online as well as take photos of my own. I made sure to visit a variety of intersections with just traffic lights (including Ellsworth/Morewood, Ellsworth/Amberson, Ellsworth/Aiken, Fifth/Amberson, Fifth/Wilkins). We had some rare sunny weather, so I seized the opportunity to snap some pics then. I also got pics during the normal Pittsburgh overcast, in some light rain, and at night. I took photos at various angles and approaches, as well as with different light stages.

  • Can always get more photos with more varied weather. (Heavier rain in the forecast!)

Yasaswini’s Status Report for 2/27

Completed Items for this week:

  • Researched and found a few OpenCV examples
  • Brushed up on OpenCV basics and learned how to handle images in that environment
  • Played around with sample images in order to upload them

To complete next week:

  • Upload the actual images of the Morewood/Elsworth intersection taken
  • Process the images in OpenCV
  • Meet with the visually impaired individual along with the rest of the group

Team Status Report for 2/20

Changes to the System:
  • We decided to change our product into a headband, which can be worn by the user, since that way the cameras will be positioned optimally. Also since a headband has the full circumference, we can easily place the processor in the back too.
  • While we do have datasets of traffic lights to train on, we decided to go with real live pictures of the Morewood/Elsworth Intersection (“ElMo”) as our main form
Current Risks and Mitigation: 
  • Making sure that the Raspberry Pi can stay powered portably for a lengthy duration and that it doesn’t get too heated. Since this is going on the user’s head, it’s important to develop some sort of barrier between the system and their head, such as padding.
  • Our current design definitely might need to be updated once the parts come in. While we have estimated as closely as possible with the sizes of the various parts online, it might be a different picture putting them together

Yasaswini’s Status Report for 2/20

Completed Items for this week: 

  • Worked on the project proposal slides
  • Found datasets of traffic lights and intersections that could be used
  • Came up with a few of the requirements
    • Percent accuracy was found by looking at other similar projects/thesis’ online
    • Had to find how to power the raspberry pi portably

It was all on schedule this week and next week’s tasks include:

  • Find examples of OpenCV uses and set up environment to upload data set
  • Help take pictures of the Morewood/Elsworth Intersection

Shayan’s Status Report for 2/20

This week, I did the following:
  • Project Proposal refinement and Scoping
    • Worked with the Team as well as Dr. Sullivan and Rashmi to continue to narrow the scope of our MVP, starting from a short list of possible features to deciding on telling the user when to cross at a specific “ElMo” type intersection
  • Literature Review / Data Collection
    • Helped identify traffic datasets for CV
      • API with Google Street View for images of specific intersection
      • Microsoft et. al. COCO dataset with tagged photos of traffic lights
  • Prep work for circuitry assembly
    • Selection of speaker for user interface

Deliverables next week:
  • Data Collection
    • Collect pictures of “ElMo” intersections (incl. Ellsworth/Morewood, Ellsworth/Amberson, Fifth/Amberson) at various angles/vantage points, lighting conditions, weather conditions
    • Tagging the traffic lights in said photos
  • Project Requirements
    • Finalize, through literature review and similar past projects, the quantitative benchmarks that are required by the user (i.e. data rate, power consumption, accuracy)
