Introduction and Project Summary

Hi, we are seniors in ECE at CMU working on our Capstone project, padL1. Caleb Song is the drummer of the group and he was the main source of inspiration for this idea. The three of us have a variety of experiences across software/hardware systems and machine learning.

For our capstone project, we propose developing an intelligent electronic drum pad system that combines both hardware and software innovation to closely emulate the feel of an acoustic drum while retaining the versatility of electronic percussion. Our target audience is beginner to intermediate drummers who are looking to actively improve their drumming skills through interactive feedback. On the hardware side, we plan to design a pad with multiple embedded sensors that can be cross-checked to triangulate the precise area of impact, enabling different sounds to be produced depending on where the pad is struck, as well as dynamic volume control based on impact velocity. On the software side, we aim to build an interactive, networked multiplayer game that allows users to compete against one another remotely using separate drum pads. To further enhance the learning experience, we plan to incorporate an AI component that analyzes a player’s tendencies during gameplay and dynamically adjusts the difficulty and feedback to help improve their skills over time. Overall, we believe this project meaningfully extends beyond existing consumer drum pad products by integrating intelligent feedback, adaptive gameplay, and sophisticated sensing, while still remaining within a feasible and impactful capstone scope.
