Introduction and Project Summary

There is a lack of security regarding suitcase possession once it’s on the conveyor belt at an airport. Although passengers are given a barcode that corresponds to each bag they’ve checked in, it is not common practice to check that each suitcase leaving the airport does in fact belong to the person taking the suitcase off of the baggage claim. Current solutions to prevent theft or accidental misclaims of baggage involve Bluetooth locks, which lock based on proximity to the owner’s phone. However, these locks can easily be broken by a thief. Other solutions to lock the wheels of a suitcase are easily circumvented by putting the suitcase on a trolley and walking it out. We aim to prevent theft from the airport, and stop anyone from leaving with a suitcase that is not theirs, by verifying the bags passing through customs at the airport exit, are registered to the person taking them out.
