Team Status Update for 02/15
This week our group has been focused on researching solution approaches to the two main components of our project: the robotic claw and the computer vision algorithm. We have also checked out some parts out of the 18500 inventory for some preliminary testing.
Arka has started looking at image processing and deep learning techniques for the object detection part. He will first experiment with the openCV library’s image processing functions to see if they are accurate enough for our use case. He has also begun to set up the RasPi and the camera module.
Claire and I (Maxine) have looked at some Arduino claw machine projects and we have decided to use stepper motors for the 2-DOF x-y gantry because of its low cost and high precision. We have not decided on a material for our chassis yet (between aluminium, acrylic or wood), we will likely choose the cheapest option. We are still researching the solution approach for the z-axis motion for our claw since the projects we looked at had a pulley system that we found too flimsy.
In the following week, Claire and I aim to have a solid design for our robotic claw and place the orders for the parts that we need. Arka aims to finish the object detection part of the CV algorithm and move onto the colour classification portion. We will also spend some time working on the slides for our upcoming design review.
