Introduction and Project Summary

Our project is to create a MadLib’s style storytelling robot that interacts with people, primarily children, to aid in language comprehension and reading. It is inspired by a storytelling companion robot created by the MIT Personal Robot Group. The robot will say a story with blanks for the user to fill in through a speech interface. When each line of the story is complete the robot will say it back and display it to aid in language learning. We aim to create a friendly, clean, and engaging user interface that has basic gestures and expressions based on the content of the story. With Katbot, we hope to provide a useful language learning toy for children learning to read and trying to expand their vocabulary.
