Mitchell Update 2/10-2/16

  • What did you personally accomplish this week on the project? Give files or photos that demonstrate your progress. Prove to the reader that you put sufficient effort into the project over the course of the week (12+ hours).
    • Ordered first round of parts. The URM37 Ultrasonic Sensor V5.0 (http://wiki.dfrobot.com/URM37_V5.0_Ultrasonic_Sensor_SKU_SEN0001_ Raspberry Pi ) and a Micro SD Card (https://amzn.to/2WXbS8G). The ultrasonic sensor was researched to have specification in our range of needs, but we are looking to test it properly ourselves before committing to it. The SD card is for our pi3.
    • Began getting parts together, we got a camera sensor and cheap ultrasonic sensor from a previous teams scrap parts and brought in an old rasberyPi3 I had from a previous project. Once we have the parts ordered will test these devices next week.
    • Began research into how the device will attach to the user. I researched other solutions people had for attaching sensors to athletes and runners. The most successful seemed to be GoPro’s chest harness solution. And also running water fannypacks for running with heavy things. I began looking into if our weight requirements for proposed sensors, battery pack and Pi could be adapted to work with these two engineered solutions. I adapted a design to wear an inverted chest strap on the back with sensors fitted, and the heavy modules (pi and battery backs) attached to the runners belt device which can more easily manage weight. I worked on a mock design of this wearable and the custom housing we would need to build to attach the sensors to the harness, and heavier modules to waist strap. And proposed this solution to the team.
    • I spent some time on team logistics and miscellaneous tasks. Like setting up a github and discussing how we plan to use it as a team. Started working on setting up our team’s blog. I also spent time writing a weekly update for myself and the team. And spent time reviewing our proposal reviews with the team.
    • I also did a 77 page reading, wrote a page long summery, and wrote up reading notes for a later group discussion for 18-500
  • Is your progress on schedule or behind? If you are behind, what actions will be taken to catch up to the project schedule?
    • My tasks are on schedule. I am currently bottlenecked waiting on the two parts listed above for the work I have to do testing and interfacing sensors. But I am ahead on my work for the housing, so I will devote more time to sensors next week, which will also help the rest of the team finalize some design choices too.
  • What deliverables do you hope to complete in the next week?
    • Next week I hope to complete a report on the URM ultrasonic sensor as to whether it is fit for our needs.
    • I would like to setup our Pi and have a framework for interfacing with sensors.
    • I will like to have ordered the parts for the chest harness and waist harness, and have a detailed design for our custom parts to fit our sensors and other modules to these harnesses
