Modern entertainment is increasingly screen-bound and single-player, which reduces face-to-face social play. Thus, we made a physical, two-player electromechanical arcade baseball game that recreates the quick, satisfying, competitive feel of classic arcade machines. The scope included:
- a tabletop playfield with a magnetically coupled ball moving via an infield Y gantry to produce different pitch motion (changeup, start-stop)
- a sensor-embedded physical bat that, when swung, activates a pin-ball style flipper to hit the ball
- ultimately, an immersive playing experience, featuring break beam sensors, LEDs, and a 7-segment display to track score and provide player feedback
Our implementation focused on producing a satisfying tactile experience through simple mechanics, so that anyone can pick it up and play.
