Sign Sight explores how a small, autonomous delivery vehicle can safely navigate sidewalk environments using computer vision. As the vehicle follows a predefined route, it visually detects pedestrians, obstacles, crosswalks, and simple signage, allowing it to slow down, stop, or adjust its path in real time. This mirrors the challenges faced by real world delivery robots that operate near people in shared spaces such as campuses and urban walkways.
What makes this project unique is our emphasis on fast and reliable reaction times using low power hardware. By performing image processing on an FPGA (field programmable gate array), the system can respond quickly to its surroundings while remaining energy efficient. The project is intended to demonstrate how hardware accelerated vision can allow for safer and more responsive autonomous systems in pedestrian environments.
