What is Theia
Theia is a CMU ECE Capstone Project designed and implemented by Evan Compton, William Mitchell, and Alli Scibisz.
Pedestrians across the country are plugged in, listening to music or podcasts, hearing the news, and making phone calls as they walk and run.  While this can promote exercise and increase productivity, it decreases the pedestrian’s awareness of the environment around them, making them susceptible to accidents with cars, bikers, and other pedestrians. The goal of Theia is to help these pedestrians by informing them about potentially dangerous entities approaching them outside of their visual field. Theia is a wearable for a walker or runner that communicates with their phone via Bluetooth, informing them through their headphones when there is something coming towards them from behind and what it is, allowing them to be safer and more aware of their surroundings without having to sacrifice the use of headphones.
