Our product, the Pool Deck Time Tracker, seeks to dramatically improve the way in which competitive swimming coaches are able to maintain data about their swimmers’ timing and performance. Traditionally, the task is done by coaches with a stopwatch, but that can easily overwhelm coaches when there are up to 50 swimmers to simultaneously keep track of. As a result, the data gathered is often limited, inconsistent, and concentrated on a few individuals.
Our product will address that gap by giving coaches live-time access to the positions, speed, and stroke metrics of their swimmers all on a live dashboard with an easy-to-use setup. Swimmers will wear a compact, waterproof wristband that will track their performance and send the data to a compute unit sitting somewhere in the pool area. That compute unit will then process the data to be uploaded onto the live dashboard.
Key design goals of our product include:
- Concurrency: the ability to handle up to 50 swimmers all at once.
- Fast and accurate performance: Accuracy to 100 ms (better accuracy than human with a stopwatch)
- Comfortable wearable: Less than 9kPa of pressure on wrist (based on studies of human wrist comfort).
