Aware-ables
For visually impaired and legally blind users, the most accessible form of written language is braille. However, in recent years, braille literacy among legally blind people in the United States has fallen to 10%. The objective of our project is to assist visually impaired and legally blind readers in locating and reading braille as well as to improve braille literacy overall. Aware-ables will take the form of a wearable device equipped with a camera used to capture the user’s point of view. From this feed, the goal is to enable the user to capture a still image of the environment in front of them. Using our computer vision algorithm, we will then locate and translate any clearly visible braille in the user’s field of view. The translated braille will then be read to the user via a pair of speakers located near their ears.
