Course Summary:

This course is designed for undergraduate students in their junior or senior year who would like to gain and introduction to data storage technology. The course consists of both a lecture and a lab section. The lectures cover the basics of data storage systems and how they are configured. Formats, signal processing, data detection, and the recording and readback process will be covered. Additionally, the anatomy and function of various technology components like heads and media will be covered.

Within the lab portion of the course, students will work with actual data storage components and systems, that have been configured to allow flexible operation, and the recording of arbitrary digital and analog patterns. This will give the students hands-on experience with data storage signals and what the limitation are to increasing recording density. Also included in the lab will be exposure to the basic behavior of ferromagnetic and magnetoresistive materials and devices. Students will observe the consequences of varying the biasing current in a magnetoresistive device and the drive field in a ferromagnetic core.
