Introduction and Project Summary

Finding and tracking vehicles involved in crimes, like stolen cars or AMBER alerts, is often slow and limited by existing technology, which relies on stationary cameras or police vehicles. We designed PlatePatrol to address this problem by turning ordinary cars into part of the solution.

PlatePatrol is a crowdsourced Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) network that uses dash cams installed in ordinary vehicles to capture license plate data, GPS locations, and timestamps. This data is sent to a central server, where it is matched against police watchlists. If there’s a match, the police officers are immediately notified. By creating a network of connected cameras, PlatePatrol makes it faster and easier for law enforcement to locate vehicles and keep communities safer.
