This week I got keyboard input and a basic shell working in the emulator, which were my goals from last week. I added the BIOS and DOS calls needed for programs to read typed input and print text. I can now type commands to list files and run HELLO.COM, enter a name, get a greeting, and return to the shell when the program finishes. I also added TYPE to display a file’s contents and made sure file-read errors return to the prompt. These changes are pushed to GitHub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The full emulator regression passed all 23 profiles and 28 host tests. Focused tests passed 40 service groups, keyboard delivery through the modeled devices, repeated COM launches, exact display of a fragmented 10 KB file, and repeated disk-error recovery. An initial error test exposed lost keys when typing during BIOS disk-error polling; that limitation is documented. Commands and results are recorded in the repository’s dated test records. These results do not establish FPGA operation or compatibility with existing third-party COM programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My software work is on track for the interim demo shell\/COM checkpoint; custom-CPU and peripheral integration remain dependencies for the hardware demonstration. Next week I plan to add common BIOS screen queries and timer services with guest diagnostics, and prepare small BIOS\/disk tests for integration with the team’s CPU and peripherals.
