Upscaling is a process that increases the quality of a video or image to a higher resolution format, whilst still displaying correctly. Despite the process sounding like an overdone troupe in spy films, upscaling has actually been around for a long time, and is currently used in a lot of areas, such as browsers.
Our group is aiming to create a hardware-based implementation of real-time video upscaling – a plug-and-play solution for users who don’t want to go through the tedious process of upscaling their old, low-quality videos through their computers, or simply lack the technical know-how. Just plug in a USB or an SD card, and our small, portable device will upscale the video and display it in real-time on any DisplayPort compatible device.
